Tips on how to dress like Serena Van Der Woodsen

As promised, here is the post on tips on how to dress like Serena Van Der Woodsen. Serena’s sense of style on the show is said to be “inspired by Kate Moss.”  That means that she mixes lots of fashion-forward and vintage pieces together for a look that is “boho chic” with a rocker-chick edge.

Like her style icon Ms. Moss, Serena is not afraid to wear something crazy if she’s in love with it, can throw anything on and make it look effortlessly fabulous, and she will never leave the house without putting a unique spin on her outfit!

Serena’s style is also inspired by the Upper East Side, so there is always an element of classic chic that gets thrown into the mix.  Serena’s clothes may not always look it, but most are very expensive designer pieces, made from luxurious fabrics and costing hundreds of dollars.

Not too worry. It’s easy to mirror Serena’s style and look just as fabulous for much less money!  Once you have got the hang of the basics, it’s very simple to make that “I just threw this on” look yours.

If you want to dress like Serena, there are a few important things that you’ll want to make sure you have in your wardrobe.  These are the staples of Serena’s look.

Well-cut Jackets:

Serena is pretty much…always wearing a jacket. They are still definitely one of her signature looks, even though jackets are a must for Manhattan during winter.

Serena has quite a collection of every type of jacket: long, short, cropped, leather, wool and everything in between!  She wears them in every color, too: bright colors like red and gold, muted shades like gray, and earth tones like camel and brown.

If you want to wear a jacket like Serena does, the cut is everything. A jacket that fits you perfectly is a wardrobe goldmine – you can wear it with everything and you’ll always look well put-together.  One way to make sure your jackets fit just right is to bring them to a tailor – it doesn’t cost much money to have seams taken in or let out, and it will pay off hugely in the long run!

Skinny Jeans:

A Kate Moss staple, Serena wore skinny jeans in many episodes.  Although they are on their way out for Fall (wider legs and boot-cuts will be in again), skinny jeans are still Serena’s denim style of choice.  If you have great legs like Serena, show them off with a pair of skinnies before they go out of style!

Dresses:

Serena has a girly side to her, so we’ve seen her in many dresses throughout the series.  Even though dresses aren’t a “style” in themselves, Serena is always wearing dresses that have unexpected details to express her quirky style.

Take for example the gray t-shirt dress that she wore to Blair’s birthday party (pictured above on the right).  The top half resembles a plain men’s shirt, but when you look down at the hem, there are gold studs all around the bottom!  Paired with sparkly black & gold tights, the look was casual yet funky at the same time.

To get this look, try to find dresses that have something unexpected about them: studs, sequins, patterns, or a pretty design.  Serena usually wears mini dresses, so if you have the legs for it, wear one with some black or sparkly tights and fabulous shoes.

Serena’s look is all about the details.  While she may just throw on a T-shirt and skinny jeans, you can bet that she’ll make the look fashion-forward and unique by adding lots of fabulous accessories!  Some of her favorites are below:

Boots:

If you’ve ever seen Gossip Girl, you know that Serena wears boots all the time!  She pairs them with skinny jeans & tees, dresses, and even her preppy school uniform.

Layered Necklaces:

Serena has lots of necklaces, and it seems like she is always wearing one or a few of them!  Her necklaces are usually long, hitting above her belly button, and she layers them for a bohemian look.

Bangles

Serena doesn’t wear bangles all the time, but when she does, she uses them to add interest to her simpler outfits.

Tips on how to dress like Blair Waldorf

Hiya, its been ages since my last blog. Just return from a “fantabulous” trip to China. Bought heaps of stuff. It was an enjoyable trip!

Enough of that…

I am a big fan of Blair Waldorf’s fashion style. For those who do not know who is Blair Waldorf is one of the main character of the popular TV series: Gossip Girl. With a fashion designer for a mother, it’s no surprise that Blair has amazing fashion sense and a true signature style.

Blair’s fashion style is very classic, preppy, and polished. She always looks as if she stepped out from a department store window; her outfit is flawless, and she never has a hair out of place. Blair’s fashion sense is definitely the quintessential upper-east-side stereotype, and she’s not ashamed of it! Blair would never step outside with unwashed hair, wear an outfit that didn’t match, or buy anything “distressed” or “boho chic.”

Here are some of Blair’s signature looks, pieces you can almost always catch Ms. Waldorf wearing around the streets of Manhattan:-

Dresses & Skirts:

When I was looking for photos of Blair Waldorf, I realized that I couldn’t find a single photo of her wearing pants! Blair is all about skirts and dresses, worn with tights in the winter and bare legs in the warmer months. She’s not into denim at all, so if you want to dress like Blair, forget about jeans.

Tailored, classic pieces:

Since she attends an upscale private school, many of Blair’s outfits are school-uniform appropriate, which means she wears lots of collared shirts, simple skirts, and ties. With a structured button-up blouse and navy blue skirt, you could channel a little bit of prep school chic yourself. For extra Blair appeal, add a brightly colored headband and tights.

Pops of Colour:
No matter how subdued Blair’s outfit may be, she always incorporates a pop of color in some way. Whether it’s a bright red trench coat over a navy dress, a technicolor bag, or orange leggings under her school uniform, Blair keeps her look fresh with brights.  Her favorite colors are red (her signature colour), orange, and yellow.

Girly Details:

Blair is a total girly-girl at heart, and because of this, she loves to incorporate feminine touches like lace, bows, and ruffles, into her outfits. This is also her go-to look for formal events and parties.

Headbands:

Blair’s signature hair accessories are her hundreds of different headbands!  From tartan to satin, Blair wears her headbands in every style you can imagine. She usually wears them with her hair down, but occasionally pulls a headband over a sleek bun or ponytail.

Tights:

In the winter months, Blair’s wardrobe revolves around tons of different pairs of tights. This season, she rocked every shade of tights imaginable, from bright red, to white, gray, and the ever popular black opaque tights. Tights are on the way out because warmer weather is fast approaching, but of course you can still wear them on cold days or if the mood strikes this summer.

After watching the fashionable ladies in Gossip Girl, I started buying bright coloured clothing & tights (red, blue, beautiful patterns) instead of buying dull coloured clothes or the same boring black tights…
